Mapping the Riot

Mapping the movements of the riot are essential for allowing the audience to understand the extent of the police's role within the event. There are several steps within this procces that must be taken to hopefully end with an interactive mapping visualizaiton (that also contains some temporal aspect). CartoDB maybe crucial in helping to display locations of important conflicts that are mentioned within the data. I am walking through each data point within the dataset and trying to organize all references to certain locations within NYC. With these references, I can then start pasting together a visual representation.

While each precinct has data within my dataset, the precincts of NYC in 1860 were different than the current ones today. I plan to use the map displayed below as the map in which I create my visualization. Furthermore, the other map below is a small example of the old precinct lines within New York.

The end product will be a visual within Neatline. The largest question or concern at this point is how do I display all the data? Should it be all on one map? Or is it more visually pleasing to split the data into precincts or officers? There are so many locations mentioned throughout the dataset and it may look extremely cluttered placing them all together.

The Filemaker file will hopefully help to track every mention of a specific location within the text. Smaller dataset may be created which include the specific layouts needed to create a mapping visualization.
